Why Validation Matters More Than the Idea

Most failed businesses weren't killed by competition. They were killed by building something nobody wanted. Validation is the discipline of proving demand exists *before* you invest serious time or money.

The 5-Step Validation Framework

Step 1: Define the Problem Precisely

Write one sentence: "People who [specific group] struggle with [specific problem] because [reason]."

If you can't write that sentence clearly, keep asking "why?" until you get specific.

Step 2: Find 10 People Who Have the Problem

Not your friends. Real people. Find them in Reddit communities, Facebook groups, LinkedIn, or in person.

Step 3: Run Problem Interviews

Talk to each person for 20–30 minutes. Do NOT pitch your idea. Ask:

  • "Tell me about the last time you experienced [problem]."
  • "What did you try? Did it work?"
  • "How much does this cost you in time or money?"

Listen. Don't convince. You're learning, not selling.

Step 4: Pre-Sell Before Building

The ultimate validation: getting someone to pay before the product exists.

  • Offer a waitlist with a small deposit
  • Sell a "founding member" slot at a discount
  • Get a signed letter of intent from a business client

If 3 people pay before you've built anything, you have validation.

Step 5: Build the Minimum Viable Version

Not the polished version. The smallest thing that delivers the core value. Deliver it manually if needed.

Red Flags vs. Green Flags

Red flags: People say "interesting!" but won't pay. Everyone likes the idea but nobody has the problem urgently.

Green flags: People describe the problem without prompting. They've tried multiple solutions and failed. Someone pre-pays.
